Our season came to a conclusion this weekend, where 18 Eagles travelled to Mt Tahoma HS for the State Championship. Issaquah saw 4 trips to the podium (top 8) across 9 events and 4 total PRs. To note — this state championship is the first time this event has been held since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so for everyone but a few seniors who had electric freshman years in 2019, these are their first state championships!
The excitement started Thursday, where Domfo Abekah finished 14th overall with a leap of 31’0.75″ in the triple jump. This jump had Domfo outperforming her 16th seed by two spots, an incredible competitive response by a freshman at her first state meet!
The 4x200m prelims were next, where Daytona Crow, Sy’nia Williams, Emma Wijsman, and Sena Pittman had to either win their heat to make finals OR finish in the next six best times. These ladies put up a mark of 1:47.10, finishing 5th in their heat and 8th in the compiled results, earning them a spot in Saturday’s final.
Kate Yahn took to the track in the girl’s 1600m — where she was met with another tactile race. After three laps of jostling and shoving, Kate let her monster kick unless, moving her to 8th overall, good enough for a trip to the podium and a new PR of 5:01.07. Awesome job learning from last week and coming out on top!
The last event of the evening — the boy’s 4x400m prelims — featuring Greyson Pike, Connor Rickey, Joshua Delgadillo, and Caleb Murphy. These young men were able to post a season’s best 3:29.05 — improving their Kingco mark by over a second — worth 12th overall. The last spot into the finals (same qualifying format as the 4x200m) was 3:25.70 by Central Valley. Greyson Pike’s leg featured his first time splitting sub-52 seconds, running 51.5, and Caleb Murphy still unleashed his signature kick to pass two teams during his leg. Congrats to these boys on an incredible season of vast improvement!
To Friday, where Sy’nia Williams competed in the girl’s 100m and Rebekah Oberlander competed in the girl’s pole vault. Sy’nia flew to a 13.18 in her race, finishing 7th in her heat and 14th overall. Rebekah, who was competing with rain and wind during the vault competition, finished with 11th overall with a jump of 9’6″. Both of these athletes outpaced their seed, proving their competitive response to be on fire during these championships. Congrats to both these senior girls!
Finishing off on Saturday, we turn to the 4x200m finals, where the group of Daytona Crow, Sy’nia Williams, Emma Wijsman, and Sena Pittman again cut time off their season best, running 1:46.49 and finishing 8th overall. This earned them a trip to the podium! Awesome job to these girls representing all the hard work our sprinters did this season.
To the throws, where Mercedes Tinder competed in the girl’s shotput. Her throw of 30’6.25″ was good for 14th overall, an awesome way to cap off an amazing throwing career for our senor. We are so proud of you!
Courtney Smith took on the high jump, where she ended up finishing in 8th with a jump of 4’10”, with some awesome attempts at 5’0″ in . This earned her a trip to the podium! Courtney is also competing next week in the heptathlon at the Washington State Combined Events Championship, which will showcase skill, speed, and endurance across the seven disciplines that make up the hept. Congrats on such an incredible season, Courtney!
Issaquah’s state championship came to a close with the girl’s 3200m, where Kate Yahn finished 5th overall with a 17-second PR (after a 10-second PR last week) of 10:43.27. Kate stuck on the chase pack for 7 laps and unleashed a finishing kick, passing 4 girls in the last lap and earning 5th place. Incredible job on two trips to the podium by her, and we look forward to next year!
