Although he was exclusively a miler in track, having never run the 3200m and the 800m only once, Tom was an incredible distance runner at IHS. In cross country, Tom was 5th in KingCo as a junior and then KingCo champ and 2nd in district as a senior. Running in the pre-1988 era, Tom qualified for just one cross country state meet, finishing 8th and becoming just the third IHS male to finish in the top 10 at state to that point. In track, Tom ate, drank, and slept the mile. As a junior, he was KingCo champ and finished 5th in the district meet, just missing a state berth. As a senior, Tom’s accomplishments boggle the mind: KingCo champ in meet record time, district champ in meet record time, 2nd in state (by just .03 seconds) in what is regarded as not only the greatest 1600m final in state history but as one of the greatest state-meet races in any event in history of the meet.

(Since 1983, just eight state champions across all classifications have run faster than 4:09.60 – that time was 4th in the race that year. The top three finishers ended up as the top three in the nation that season.) Tom’s performance earned him All-American status for 1983 and placed him 4th in state history in the event. As of 2010, he is 8th in state history and just one IHS boy has come within 10 seconds of his mark since he graduated. Simply put, Tom is one of the greatest milers in state history.
