1979 AAA State XC Championships – 1st Place

The most decorated male distance runner in school history, Mike won an astounding 13 individual league/district/state titles including the 1979 State cross country championship, the only individual state cross country titlist IHS has had, male or female. A very talented runner from an early age, Mike set the freshman state record for the 2-mile in 1977; it was not broken until 1985 and only three freshmen in the state have beaten his mark since as of 2010.

He is the school record holder for 9th, 10th, & 11th grades in both the mile and 2-mile. Running in the pre-1988 era of cross country, he barely missed qualifying for the state meet as a sophomore but finished 7th as a junior and then 1st as a senior. Mike is the first (of just two total to date) IHS boy to average under 5:00/mile at the state cross country meet. He won the league Triple Crown as both a junior and a senior and also won the district triple crown as a senior. He broke Bob Brodel’s school records in the mile and 2-mile as a junior. When he was on his game, Mike ran amongst the elite of the state and few have been better in KingCo history.
