1967 AA State Meet – Mile – 1st place

XC: 11:29 – Green Lake (Seattle), 2.3 miles, 1966

Bob was one of the first high school distance running superstars on the Eastside. Running in an era when cross country was just getting going and all tracks were cinder, Bob’s marks and accomplishments stand the test of time and stack right up there with the best in school history. In cross country, Bob placed 2nd in the inaugural KingCo meet in 1965 (just one second from 1st), then came back to become league champ the next year in course-record time. During Bob’s three cross country seasons, the state meet was an invitational format with no qualifying district meet so he did not have an opportunity to amass success on the district level, however, Bob placed in the top 12 all three years at the state invitational meet, two of those in the top 10.

In track as a senior, Bob won KingCo (setting a 16-year meet record) and district titles on his way to winning the state championship in the mile run. Mainly a miler, he competed in the 880y (800m) and 2-mile (3200m) just a handful of times and graduated with school records in all three events. His mile and 2-mile marks stood for 12 years and his 880y mark for an amazing 27 years. Even though it’s been more than 40 years since Bob graduated, his 880 and mile marks are both in the top 130 all-time in state history.
